Dude is right, a big half stack amp are hard to mic unless you’re in a bigger live room, they just don’t sound good in bedroom and smaller sizes rooms really when recording. Those amps are meant for loud playing in a bigger room to move air. It’s true that a 1 (or2) x12 will always record better in a smaller space.
You can always add studio room reverb to an fx send for guitars to make them sound bigger too

90s rectos were too touchy. EQ didn’t have the range it should have. What cab/speaker and mic do you use? You could run it into a Torpedo and use some IR’s. Joey Sturgis has some great ones. I mix that with a mic’d Marshall with V30’s. Best of both worlds.

I hear ya. Are you using OD in front of the amp? Graphic eq in FX loop? Either way, you should be able to get quality tone out of it for how much they cost. I’m not a fan of the modules tho. It was just Randall’s attempt to compete with digital modeling amps/presets. Never seemed like they hit the mark tho.
I love the clean module, it’s very nice. This actually sounds like the preamp tubes might need replacing, I’m gonna give that a shot. I use an OCD in front of it usually. Sometimes a Maxon. I have an EQ for the FX loop but it wasnt hooked up today when I was fucking around. New preamp tubes and an EQ in the FX loop is my next move. That and maybe using a 421 rather than a 57.
That’ll give you what you want. I used to blend an e609 and a 57. Beef AND sizzle. 421’s are great, especially thru a good preamp.
And FWIW, Hammett and Hetfield use AxeFX live. Haven’t been a fan of their tones since 91. Now it’s just low gain mud.
Their tones have always sucked, save for whatever Bob did to them on the Black Album.
Don’t like the Mark IV era???? I love those and the tones Lamb of God gets. One trick pony, but it’s a solid amp.
I dont’ like anything about the tones on RTL, MoP or AJFA. It’s all James just trying to sound different and Fleming making too much space on the first two

I’m running a 5150iii for my live rig. Planning on the Stealth mod and Marshall voicing that Kruze Kontrol does as well as a variac mod. Once I do that I’m pretty much covered amp wise for the rest of my life. I have a Hot Rod Deluxe IV as well, nice 1×12 but I use that mostly for clean, overdubs, works great with pedals and mostly raw black metal tone.
