As someone with experience, I think you guys are being too hard on Mormons, and on the caller. One specific, largely objective correction: the Utah Mormons hate the fundamentalists/polygamists. That’s why they’re in other states or other countries. Romney’s dad grew up in a somewhat different time. These days, the LDS church is essentially united in their embarrassment about polygamy and their yearning to be respectable mainstream corporate Americans. Moving to Salt Lake City isn’t a realistic option for these people.
Also, the working class Mormons I’ve met are essentially dopey normie Hannity/Beck/Limbaugh conservatives. They don’t have any perfidious or in-group scheme or unique perspective. The upper-middle class ones are basically typical me-me-me well-to-do Boomeresque professionals. Not good, but nothing different from upper-middle class Southern Baptists. If you need convincing, look up the recent shenanigans at the Southern Baptist Convention. This is what the caller was trying to get across.
To clarify: I have no connection or family history with the LDS church and met only one Mormon before my mid-20’s.
Another thing: it’s common for working class Mormons to be pissed at Romney, especially since he got elected and continued to countersignal Trump. The Mormons who still passively support Romney seem like 1980’s country club Republicans supporting Reagan. They live in a very white, largely functional state and want to cling to a sense of normalcy even as they see the degenerate brown walls closing in. Again, it’s not what we want, but it’s status quo for regional white Americans.
