I’ve always wondered about the Jewish role in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It is my understanding that many Jews fled Spain after the expulsion to Eastern Europe, specifically Poland. The PLC had a very liberal constitution and decentralized state apparatus that was eventually weakened to the point of dissolution and parition. I got the impression Poland had a lot of Jewish and Protestant immigrants during the early reformation period because they had high degree of religious liberty by the standard of the time.
Not an expert on Poland though so might be wrong.
Poland (especially northern and western part) was subject to massive internal divisions because of Protestant churches. The Swedish destroyed more churches in The Deluge than the Nazis and communists combined
