God of the gaps really is Christianity’s favorite fallacy. Keep in mind that abiogenesis is simply the theory that living matter came from non-living matter. To me that sounds more likely than “a god created everything (but not just any god, OUR god – Yahweh (who isn’t a Jewish god somehow))”.
You can criticize the current theories and hypothesis surrounding how abiogenesis may have happened, but you’re assuming science works in absolutes. Current theories of abiogenesis are just the best theories science has so far. No, they’re not very good. However, that doesn’t mean “see, Yahweh did it”.
So why do you hate your dad?
I don’t hate my dad.
I explained the misuse of the “god of the gaps” in the episode. You should go back and listen for a refresher on the topic. We also explained that naturalistic abiogenesis is categorically impossible using the information we have available to us now.
What you’re engaged in is science of the gaps. “Science doesn’t explain this BUT IT WILL! SOME DAY! I PROMISE! TAKE THAT CHRISTIANS!!” If a naturalistic cause is untenable then we’re justified in positing a personal cause.
I heard that after posting the comment – it’s not GotG if intelligent design is the best explanation. I’ll concede that, however I’ll point out 2 things.
1) I don’t believe naturalistic abiogenesis is impossible, merely that current explanations by science don’t hold up.
2) Let’s say intelligently designed abiogenesis is the answer – you still have lightyears to go before proving that it was Yahweh that did it, and not Thor, Odin, Freya, the Greek pantheon, Lovecraftian deities who made humanity as a joke or mistake, etc. Better yet, the answer could easily be aliens.
Very interesting objections. The trouble with waiting for science to catch up to naturalistic expectations is that the data is trending away from naturalism. The more information we have available to us, the less and less likely naturalism seems. Getting from intelligently designed abiogenesis to the God of the Bible isn’t as difficult as you seem to think. There are no non-Christian deities who are said to have created the universe (space, time and everything in them). They are either generated from primordial “chaos” or are just one in an infinite series of supernatural beings caught in an endless cycle… Read more »
In response to the guy who wrote in about depression: Depression necessitates a lot of focus on the self, but not in a productive way. It is one thing to spend time focusing on what portion of our character or circumstances needing improvement so long as it leads to action as Myles hit on, but to make the depression going away the focus or to see it as any part of your identity is counterproductive. Personally, I found it helpful to simply accept that I was depressed (hell, there’s no shortage of reasons to be) but not to wallow in… Read more »
Mongoose should put together a bitchute video with his peanut butter take down of abiogenesis.
I’ll keep it in mind, I have plans for video related miniatures content in the future, if there is demand for such a thing I’ll figure something out.
I’m prepared for maximum grug arguments, but I’m hoping I’m wrong. Not a Christian, but I really enjoy listening and wish I was able to have faith. In my experience, when Christians touch evolution it turns to maximum grugery, which reinforces my inability to become a committed Christian. Gonna be a fun one to listen to.
Pick up a rock brother
I think he was being polite but honest
We actually make very pointed and sophisticated arguments against naturalistic abiogenesis, explaining how the conditions under which could actually happen then point out that those conditions simply don’t exist on Earth without such conditions being consciously created. I think you’ll enjoy it.
Totally going to get on that contest! I’ve been painting some icons so I will make your avi very based. Gotta think of a cool logo too. Will be only traditional medium art, never fucked with digital, I hope that’s aight
Looking forward to this one, Mongoose is always a great guest.
Now I can’t not listen to this one
Half an hour in and it feels like the opposite of Deep Space Nine. I tried watching DS9 hoping to get some science fiction and gave up after 30 minutes of magic crystals and prophecies. Here I’m trying to listen to some spiritual conversation and I get an organic chemistry lecture.
The other difference being, I’m going to finish this episode.
Dont give up on Deep Space Nine. It’s roots go deep.
I think I’m happier just letting Star Trek exist as a sort of Platonic ideal of a show that uses science fiction tropes as a vehicle to occasionally ask interesting questions about the human condition. If I just watch the actual show, it doesn’t get better than seeing Jolene Blalock’s pokies in the first episode of Enterprise.
And now I have to go see if those are Khazar milkers…

Hail the Godcast
Thank Jesus for a new podcast. Love you guys, keeping me from killing myself in this hellish anti-white male clownworld.
