I’ve been sitting on the first draft of this essay for quite some time. During that time this essay has been posted to introduce the word “Amerikaner” which I have since seen adopted in several twitter bios. I think Amerikaner is an excellent alternative to be adopted by nonSoutherners, especially those of significant Germanic descent. I would encourage other regional (white) subcultures to also embrace an ethnic identity in terms other than American or hyphenated-American. The American identity has become near worthless and circles the drain as I type. This article is written to Southerners, but I think the ideas presented could be useful to any nationalist group.
Weaknesses of only identifying as Southerners
Weakness #1- Wrong frame of reference
When we speak of The South, we are carelessly using the United States as a frame of reference. If we only seek recognition as a distinct region and culture within the United States then we should continue to call ourselves Southerners and refer to our land as The South. However, if we seek independence and international recognition as a sovereign nation, then we ought to use ourselves and our own land as a frame of reference, without respect to the United States.
Weakness #2- Lacking uniqueness and clarity
Many other countries and continents around the world have their own “Souths” and “Southern” regions. New Zealand even has a Deep South. In order to use South, or the South, it must be a modifier affixed to a frame of reference everybody knows, comparable to South Africa, South Korea, or West Germany. We could call our country The American South, and that would work with respect to other North Americans, but understanding the difference between American South andSouth America may be a bit of a burden to the rest of the world, and a bit of an awkward disservice to a newly sovereign nation. I can only suspect that this would cause a lot of confusion for relations with the rest of the world.
Weaknesses #3- Already in use with a weak definition
Wikipedia currently defines Southerner as:
A resident of the Southern United States, usually people who identify themselves as such.
Merrian Webster defines Southerner as:
a native or inhabitant of the South; especially a native or resident of the Southern part of the United States
dictionary.reference.com defines Southerner as:
a native or inhabitant of the southern U.S.
By all three of these definitions, if two Massachussettan parents who relocated to Charlotte, NC and birthed and raised children there, the children would be Southerners, especially if they self identified as such.
By all three of these definitions, a negro can claim to be just as Southern as we are, after all, being a Southerner is just a state of mind. Right?
You can bet that Rainbow Confederates will argue that blacks are some of the finest Southerners they’ve ever met--And according to many dictionaries they’d be right! Meet the mascots for the Virginia Flaggers, a Southern heritage group.
If that’s not enough to convince you there’s a problem, then by all means visit blacksouthernbelle.com. It is only a matter of time before we have Latino-Southerners, and every other distortion of the word. Obviously the term Southerner has always implied whiteness, but like American, the definition was not rainbow-proof, and we are suffering the consequences. It is possible that we may reclaim and sure up the name Southerner once we have more power, but for now, it seems we have lost control of the definition of the word. Dictionaries and other info sources will doubtless side with our adversaries.
We can solve this problem by coining a new and unique name for ourselves, giving us absolute power to create a rainbow proof definition of the word. The League of the South has gone to the trouble of creating the Southern Nationalist Flag rather than just using the Confederate flag alone.
I think this was a good move because on TV I’ve heard all kinds of arguments about what the Confederate battle flag stands for--racism, hate, heritage (not hate), rebellion, white supremacy, etc. We all know that for generations, the Confederate Battle Flag has been the de facto ethnic symbol for Southern whites. Huge problem with it only being the de facto symbol and not the explicitly defined symbol. This is not a problem with the SN flag, partly because it is still new, but also because its creators defined what it stands for.
Likewise we need to explicitly define our people as a subset of the Western European (white) diaspora so that our movement cannot be compromised by Rainbow Confederates and others who will try to politely tell us what we really mean and who we really are. LOS has sort of done this for the word Southerner, but that just leaves it at LOS definition vs various dictionaries plus Rainbow Confederates and armies of Marxists. This alone justifies a new name for ourselves, a newly coined term where we are the undisputed final authority on the definition. We may use the name Southerner, but we do not own the word. If we coin for ourselves a new name, introduced and encouraged in a publication(s) for the world to see, then we are the owners of the word and may always cite the primary source when we are pressed to defend that we are a whites-only group and which whites qualify.
Weakness #4-Aesthetics and meme-ability
This may seem trifling compared to the other weaknesses listed, so I’m throwing it in free. My opinion is obviously subjective, so your mileage may vary, but to me the terms Southern Nationalism, The South, and Southerners just don’t seem to have very high meme potential. It just seems like too many letters and syllables to make it very meme-able, and good memes can go further than a lot of $$$ spent on promotion. To me the redundant ər syllables in South·ər·nər really make the word tedious to pronounce and reduces the aesthetic appeal. Also when we speak of The South we are stuck with the burden of always putting the article The in front of it. I know we have plenty of history referring to The South and ourselves as Southerners but it doesn’t hurt to have another alternative, just like it doesn’t hurt to have an AR-15 alongside your grandfather’s break-action shotgun.
The best possible name and definition would:
- be a unique, new term coined and defined by us so that we can have absolute authority over the definition, once and for all.
- emphasize our race and ethnicity.
- use itself rather than The United States as a frame of reference.
- be recognizable, so that people easily infer the meaning upon first hearing it (cf. homophobia, Islamophobia, gay marriage, African-American, etc.)
- roll off the tongue easily and pleasantly. Short and sweet, with high meme potential.
- be selectively interchangeable with the word Southerner, at our convenience. Jews employ a similar tactic when at their convenience, they may instantly become a religious group rather than a race and vice versa, or selectively identify as either white or Jew, depending on the conversation at hand.
Proposed language for self identification
The first thing that comes to my mind is to use derivatives of the word Dixie.
Dixie is currently defined:
the states of the SE United States & especially those which constituted the Confederacy
Also called Dixieland, Dixie Land. the southern states of the United States, especially those that were formerly part of the Confederacy.
An informal name for the southern states of the US. It was used in the song ‘Dixie’ (1859), a marching song popular with Confederate soldiers in the American Civil War.
Southerners have long endearingly referred to the South as Dixie, where Northerners seem to have no such custom. While I don’t have the privilege of debuting it here, it is already by convention our word, used many times in song lyrics, and is already acceptably defined by multiple dictionaries. I have checked by googling and the terms Dixian and Dixie people are not in common use so they are free game for us to coin and define according to our liking. Furthermore, using derivations of Dixie marry well with the saltire in the current Southern Nationalist Flag, both because of the French Dix and the Roman numeral X representing the number 10,and because the saltire may be supposed to represent the X in Dixie.
Furthermore, Dixie, as commonly used, refers mainly to cultural rather than political borders, so it is up to us whether Southern Missouri, Southern Ohio, Southern Indiana, Southern Illinois, East Kansas, or anything west of Texas are part of Dixie or not. The US census has already defined the South with borders based on state boundaries that do not include all people who are culturally, racially Southerners.
Here’s some proposed core terminology:

Also called Southern, Dixie. of or relating to Dixie, the Dixian people, culture, or language.
Also called Southerners (esp. when affixed with “unreconstructed”), Southern people, Dixians, Dixie people, Dixie nation, Confederates. A European-derived, Christian nation and ethnic group native to Dixie, biologically descended primarily from the British and Scots-Irish peoples who settled the region during the Colonial Period and Plantation Era, who remain distinct from other branches of the British diaspora and without significant admixture from African or Amerindian races. Ethnic Dixians speak their own widely recognized dialect of the English language and retain other cultural distinctions apart from the North Midlands and East Anglia derived cultures of North America.
Also called Southern nationalist, Dixie nationalist. A Dixian who embraces and advocates for Dixieism.
Also called Southern nationalism, Dixie nationalism. an ideology promoting the survival, well being, independence and sovereignty of the Dixian people as a distinct nation and ethnic group, as an expression of loyalty to the Dixian people.

*It may be preferable to drop the second i from Dixieism and Dixiest to spell as Dixeism, Dixeist, or simply count both spellings as correct and see which version naturally predominates in popular use. Dixieism has been used to describe the growth of Southern Nationalism from 1848-61 so we may want to include/exclude the second i to liken to/distinguish from the Southern Nationalism of that era.
The above definition for Dixian people:
- rules out arguments for African-Dixians, Indian-Dixians, Asian-Dixians, etc.
- rules out arguments for Dixians with high percentage African or Indian admixture while allowing wiggle room for persons having negligible levels of admixture, i.e. 1/32 Cherokee, 1% negro, etc.
- distinguishes us from other whites of North America.
- allows a little wiggle room for Dixians with significant nonBritish/Scots-Irish European ancestry, i.e. persons of part French, part German, part Irish, etc admixture.
- rules out the argument for “becoming a Dixian” by means of adoption, naturalization, or self identification by including the term biologically descended.
- leaves open the possibility that Dixians born or raised outside Dixie may be allowed to repatriate.
- rules out arguments that we are not a Christian nation, while not demanding that every single Dixian confess Christianity. By this definition we can tolerate or ban any other religions we choose.
- names our native tongue as our legitimate and proper dialect of the English language rather than ceding some other dialect as the gold standard. (Though with the publication of a dictionary and a grammar book we could argue that we speak a separate language.)
- does not emphasize our failed war for independence as a key component of our identity.
If we embrace these definitions, the term Dixian People can never become as bastardized as the term American People has become.
Here are some more potentially useful terms with hereby proposed definitions. I am grouping them separately because they have more to do with meming than with definitions for self identification.
hostility, prejudice, or discrimination against Dixians as an ethnic or racial group. Antidixianism is considered to be a form of racism.

a range of negative attitudes and feelings toward Dixians, Dixianism, or Dixian symbols, including contempt, prejudice, aversion, hatred, bigotry, or antipathy, may be based on irrational fear, jealousy, or desire to eliminate its presence to secure a presumed purity, and is often related to liberal beliefs.
War on Dixie:
an expression in United States politics used to describe certain legislation as a wide-scale effort to restrict Dixian rights, especially their rights to self determination, to govern themselves, to preserve and display their ethnic pride and heritage, to maintain their customs, to manage their own borders and immigration policy, or to otherwise oppose their own genocide via ethnic displacement and miscegenation.

I think we can take it for certain that self identifying as Dixians with the definitions provided above would clearly distinguish us from the Rainbow Confederates, negroes, yankees, mystery meats, and any other undesired entryists that are sure to come our way if we are successful in acquiring our independence or winning any other battles for our people. This is NOT an unfounded suspicion, but a reliable phenomenon:
Once you build it (something great) they (entryists, opportunists) will come.
It is our job to proactively employ protective language to prevent this problem in our preindependence movement and in our charter documents.
It may be hard to get a critical number of Southerners happily identifying as Dixians, and many may reject the term completely for tradition sake or because they are cucks. On the other hand, it may take a very short time before we have more people identifying as Dixieists than Southern Nationalists. Consider the explosive rise of the TEA party and the Alt-Right. It is doubtful that these movements would have been as successful as they have been without having short and sweet, highly meme-able names. Names like “Traditionalist Advocates for National Border Enforcement and Ethnic Homogeneity” probably wouldn’t have caught on so well. Of course in the end it is up to the Dixian people whether these terms stick or not, but the root word, Dixie, has already stuck for over 150 years. Perhaps someday we will print our own...Dixianary.
